James Chang張証荃

Senior executive in optoelectronics and semiconductors

Fourteen years in optoelectronics and semiconductors, from frontline sales to vice president and general manager. In the last two years I have used AI as my engineering team to build ERP modernisation, barcode scanning, label printing and a learning platform — I can lead a team and I can build the prototype.

Self-built systems

2015 – 2025 · built in-house

The company did have an IT department, but an earlier misstep there — plus concerns over cost and confidential data leaving the building — led me to carve out the most critical checkpoints and build them myself: not outsourced, not handed to internal IT. I built inventory, manufacturing and R&D management in Excel and Access, and it worked well. Small, fast and controllable — the right answer at the time; the cost was a bulkier process, and multi-user collaboration and data sync were its ceiling. After starting with ChatGPT in 2022, my learning shifted to moving those workflows online.

Access management system

2015–2022 · built in-house

Inventory, manufacturing orders and R&D data in one database: tables, forms, queries, reports and permissions all designed by me. Critical data stays in-house, and daily lookups and monthly reports no longer meant stitching spreadsheets together.

Limits: single-machine storage, difficult multi-user work, manual data sync — the reason I later moved to online workflows.

  • Database design

Access learning site

2022–2025 · internal use

After ChatGPT accelerated my learning, I turned the concepts I kept confusing into an internal site: common syntax, the object model, examples and the mistakes I had made — written while learning, there when needed.

  • Internal material
  • Knowledge curation
  • Access VBA

The strengths and the limits are both written down, because they decided what came next.

Recent work

2025 – 2026 · personal projects

After leaving the management role I focused on one thing: being able to build it myself. I do not write code; I use AI as the engineering team — requirements, architecture, data, testing, release — one project at a time, and I rebuild when it breaks.

ERP modernisation

2025–2026 · personal project

Rebuilt a long-running Access inventory system as a web application on SQLite and Django. I defined the data inventory, field mapping, import rules and acceptance checklist; AI did the implementation, and I fixed the errors round after round.

  • Data migration
  • Field mapping
  • Acceptance spec

Web barcode scanning

2025 · personal project

A scanner that opens on phone, tablet or desktop, replacing pen-and-paper stock takes and shared USB guns.

  • Shop-floor process
  • Scanning
  • Cross-device

Bluetooth label printing

2025 · personal project

Layout, preview and print to a Bluetooth label printer straight from the browser — no vendor software, no driver install, any store device can use it.

  • Bluetooth
  • Label layout
  • Retail operations

Learning platform

2025 · personal project

A download, organise and search system for course material and notes, turning scattered files into a knowledge base I use every day.

  • Knowledge management
  • Data curation

All of the above are personal projects built with AI assistance; they are not company results.
